Halloween SOS: 5 Creative Ways to Use AI for Last-Minute Halloween Planning

By Leilani Decena, SHRM-SCP | Founder, AI x HR Studios
Halloween is tomorrow! 🎃
Your costume isn't ready, the decorations are still in storage, and somehow you've volunteered to plan a party.
Sound familiar?
Before you panic, what if AI could help you pull everything together without spending a fortune or losing your mind?
That's exactly what we explored during Halloween SOS: Costume Fail? Party Panic?
Let AI Save Halloween!, a free, interactive workshop I hosted through AI x HR Studios on October 24.
From last-minute costume ideas to party planning, decorating, and Halloween games, we explored how a little creativity and the right AI prompts can make a big difference.
And the best part? You don't have to be an AI expert to try any of it.
Here are five creative ways to put AI to work before the trick-or-treaters arrive.
1. Rescue a Last-Minute Halloween Costume
You don't necessarily need to buy a costume. Sometimes the best ideas are already hiding in your closet!
Instead of searching endlessly for inspiration, try asking AI to work with what you already own.
Try this prompt:
"Help me create five clever Halloween costumes using a black dress, sunglasses, a scarf, and cardboard. I have 30 minutes and a budget of $0. Rank the ideas from easiest to most creative, and explain how to put each one together."
Here's another trick: Show AI what's in your closet! 📸
Why describe everything when you can show it?
Take a picture of a few clothing items, shoes, or accessories you already own and upload it to an AI tool that supports images.
You can even lay several items on your bed, take one photograph, and ask AI to help you put together an entire costume.
Try this photo prompt:
"I'm uploading a photo of clothing and accessories I already own. Look at the items in the picture and suggest five creative Halloween costumes I could put together without buying anything new. Tell me which items to combine, how to style each costume, and what small details would make the character recognizable. Keep the ideas fun, comfortable, and easy to assemble in under 30 minutes. Don't assume I own anything that isn't visible in the photo."
Want to take it a step further?
Ask AI to generate a visual concept showing how one of those costume ideas might look when assembled.
Just remember that AI-generated images may change clothing details or invent accessories you don't actually own.
A quick privacy tip: Photograph the clothing rather than your entire closet or room. Remove personal documents, family photographs, and anything else you wouldn't want uploaded.
The AI lesson: Sometimes showing AI what you're working with is more effective than describing it. The more useful context you provide, the more relevant its suggestions can become.
2. Plan a Halloween Party Without Overspending
Imagine you've invited eight friends over, but you've barely started planning.
Before you panic, put AI to work as your party-planning assistant.
Try this prompt:
"Act as my Halloween party planner. I'm hosting eight adults at home and have a $40 budget. Suggest simple decorations, snacks, drinks, and three interactive games.
Prioritize things I may already have. Create a shopping list with estimated costs and a preparation timeline."
You can ask AI to adjust the plan for children, different budgets, or dietary preferences.
Hosting outdoors? Include your location and ask for weather-appropriate alternatives, then check the actual forecast.
Remember to verify prices, ingredient labels, food-safety information, and product availability before making purchases.
The AI lesson: AI can turn a collection of ideas into an organized action plan, but you're still responsible for checking the details.
3. Decorate Using What You Already Have
Have 20 minutes and a living room that doesn't look remotely spooky?
You might be surprised by what you can create with a few ordinary household items.
Try this prompt:
"I want to decorate one corner of my living room for Halloween. I have black fabric, paper, string, battery-operated candles, and three pumpkins. Suggest three inexpensive decorating themes. Give me step-by-step instructions for the easiest option. Keep everything safe for pets and guests."
You can even upload a photograph of your space to an AI tool that supports images.
Ask for decorating suggestions using your existing furniture, decorations, and household supplies.
For example, you could ask AI to visualize a cozy haunted-library theme, an elegant black-and-gold Halloween party, or a playful pumpkin corner.
Just make sure to remove personal information and private photographs before uploading images.
And remember, AI-generated decorating concepts aren't necessarily accurate construction plans. Check that anything you create is safe and practical.
The AI lesson: AI can help you visualize possibilities, but human judgment determines what's affordable, realistic, and safe.
4. Create Halloween Games and Activities
Need something more entertaining than another bowl of candy?
AI can help you design trivia games, scavenger hunts, mysteries, and storytelling activities.
Try this prompt:
"Create a 15-minute Halloween mystery game for six adults. Make it funny rather than frightening. Include clues, simple instructions, and a surprising ending. Use only paper and ordinary household objects."
Want to make it more challenging?
Ask AI to create additional clues or adjust the difficulty.
Hosting a virtual gathering? Ask it to redesign the activity for Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
You could even turn it into a collaborative storytelling game where everyone contributes an unexpected twist.
The AI lesson: AI can be a creative collaborator. You provide the direction, and it helps you explore possibilities.
5. Discover an AI Skill You Can Use Long After Halloween
Here's where things get interesting.
The same techniques you use to plan costumes, organize parties, and brainstorm decorations can help you tackle everyday responsibilities and workplace projects.
Think about the process.
Describe the problem. Explain what you're trying to accomplish.
Provide context. Share the information AI needs to understand your situation.
Set boundaries. Include your budget, timeline, available resources, and preferences.
Evaluate the suggestions. Decide what's practical and appropriate.
Keep refining. Ask follow-up questions until you have something useful.
Whether you're developing training, planning an event, organizing information, creating marketing materials, or brainstorming a new project, these habits can help you work more effectively with AI.
And you don't have to memorize complicated prompting formulas to get started.
Sometimes a simple conversation is enough.
One Prompt for Almost Any Last-Minute Emergency
Here's a bonus prompt you can adapt for Halloween or another everyday challenge.
"Act as my practical planning assistant. Here's my problem: [describe the challenge]. I have [available time], a budget of [amount], and these resources: [list what you have]. Give me three realistic options, rank them by effort, recommend the most practical one, and provide five steps to get started. Include a backup plan."
The key is to replace the bracketed information with your own details.
You'll be surprised how many situations can benefit from this simple approach.
Your Creativity Is Still the Secret Ingredient
AI can generate suggestions, organize information, and help you explore possibilities.
But you're still the one making the decisions.
You know your audience, your resources, and what will actually work.
That's the approach we encourage at AI x HR Studios: practical, responsible AI that supports human creativity and judgment.
Sometimes the best place to start learning isn't with a complicated business problem.
Sometimes it's with a Halloween costume, a few pumpkins, and a little imagination.
